House Bill 496

Lead Sponsors: Representative Jim Hoops

Status: Passed the House 94-0 (June 26, 2024)

Description: The bill makes a number of changes to the law regarding county auditors. These include:

  • Rounding estimated revenue of tax levies on ballot language to the nearest $1 instead of $1,000.

  • Changes the requirement that an owner of tax-exempt property must notify the auditor of changes in exemption status, rather than changes of property use.

  • Allows the auditor to waive or refund manufactured home taxes due to damage or destruction on their own initiative rather than requiring a request from the owner.

  • Eliminates a requirement that the auditor and county treasurer keep records of all appointments of deputy auditors.

CCAO Position: No position (as of August 2024)

Notes: The County Auditors Association of Ohio provided proponent testimony.
