General Assembly Page

Lead Sponsors: Senator Theresa Gavarone and Senator Bill DeMora

Status: 4th Hearing in Senate General Government (April 24, 2024)

Description: The bill generally prohibits the use of "ranked choice voting" systems in Ohio. The bill allows home rule governments (such as municipalities or charter counties) to use ranked choice voting systems but withholds Local Government Funding from entities that opt to use ranked choice voting, beginning the first month that the resolution or ordinance enacting ranked choice voting becomes effective. If a government subsequently repeals the resolution or ordinance, it will receive LGF payments again, but will not receive back payments from the period it was ineligible.

Withheld LGF funding for governments that enact ranked choice voting are deposited back to the state General Revenue Fund.
