The County Commissioners Association of Ohio (CCAO) applauds today’s signing by Governor Mike DeWine of House Bill 687. This bill invests significant state resources in county jail construction.
“CCAO sincerely thanks Gov. DeWine for signing House Bill 687 into law and further investing in the state-county partnership,” said CCAO President Debbie Lieberman. “This investment will strengthen public safety and provide resources to counties to address the evolving needs of the criminal justice system.”
House Bill 687, the state capital appropriations bill, contains $50 million for county jail facility construction and renovation. Many of Ohio’s jails are outdated and are ill-equipped to address the needs of their jail population. Furthermore, jails are tasked with managing a growing female population and a rise in inmates with a mental health diagnosis. This funding will allow counties to make vital updates to their jails and increase public safety for their communities.
CCAO thanks Gov. DeWine for the ongoing partnership to build stronger counties for a stronger Ohio.
